Manot Cave Excavation

Manot Cave is a unique site, combining an active karstic cave with remains of prehistoric human occupation inside the cave. The project, which began in 2010, have exposed so far cultural and human remains from the Middle and Upper Paleolithic periods.
The cave is located in the western Galilee, overlooking the Mediterranean coast. The cave contains stratified layers of human occupation, including well preserved ancient hearths, many flint and bone tools, shells and animal bones.
The cultures represented at the cave are associated with the dispersal of Modern Humans from Africa in Eurasia, and the site is becoming the most important site excavated today in the Middle East in connection with the research of early modern human dispersal. A multidisciplinary and international team of researchers have come together in order to expose the secrets of the cave and answer some hotly-debated issues in human evolution.

The project is headed by the institutions of the Israeli Antiquities Authority, Ben-Gurion University and Tel-Aviv University, with the participation of the Center for Human Origins, Case Western Reserve University.

The next excavation season will take place between July 6 – July 31, 2014, and is open for volunteers age 16 and up who are willing to take part in an exciting scientific research.

Volunteers are welcome to join the excavation, for a minimal period of one week.
